You join the team behind OpsTrack, a small operations service, and work on its repository the way software and DevOps teams do every day. Each lab opens that project at the exact point the previous one left it, so the story carries through: you configure Git and make the first commits, branch and resolve conflicts, collaborate with teammates through a shared remote that protects main, undo mistakes without losing work, publish releases, and investigate production history. The course ends with an incident you handle alone, from the first alert to a tagged hotfix.

There are no video lectures and no reading-only lessons. Every lab checks what you actually did in the repository and tells you what is still missing. Four knowledge checks close the modules where the ideas matter most.

What you'll learn

  • Keep the working tree, the index and history straight, and commit changes that each tell one story
  • Keep secrets out of a repository before they are ever committed
  • Branch, merge and resolve content and modify/delete conflicts with confidence
  • Fetch before you push, repair a diverged branch, rebase your own work and cherry-pick one fix
  • Undo at the right layer with restore, reset, revert and the reflog — and know which is safe on shared history
  • Tag and publish releases, enforce standards with hooks, and use worktrees and submodules
  • Search history, trace a line through a refactor with blame, and find a regression with bisect
  • Run a production hotfix end to end without disturbing your teammates

Prerequisites

Basic comfort in a Linux shell: moving between directories, listing and reading files, and editing a text file. No Git experience is needed.

Nothing to install. Every lab runs in your browser with a terminal and an editor.

Who it's for

Developers and DevOps engineers who use Git every day but reach for a search engine when something goes wrong, newcomers who want to learn it properly the first time, and team leads who want a shared, practical baseline.

FAQ

Is this really free? Yes. Register, enrol, and launch. No subscription, no card.

Do I need a GitHub account? No. Every lab has its own practice repository and team remote. Nothing is pushed to your GitHub.

Can I start over if I break the repository? Yes. Each lab can put its project back to the starting point, and you can relaunch a lab up to ten times.

Do I have to take the labs in order? Each lab stands on its own, but the story and the skills build module by module, and the capstone assumes you have done the six modules before it.
